Morosini Codex
|
The Morosini Codex is the largest surviving single private
document from 15th century Venice, consisting of 561 folios
written on both sides. Only extracts have been published in the
past. Publication of the complete text has begun with the first
volume (1999). Publication consists of transcribing the text and
printing it according to the current conventions for publishing
texts of this nature, and providing it with an English
translation and a commentary.
The Codex begins with a chronicle
of Venetian history up to about 1400. This is followed by a
'Diary' of events in Venice, or events occurring elsewhere as
they were reported in Venice, up to 1434. Much of the information
which is contained in the Codex relates to the Byzantine Greek
world of the time.
Publication is being undertaken by
a team led by John
Melville-Jones.
