Thirty-first Conference of the Australasian Society for Classical StudiesUniversity of Western Australia, 2-5 February 2010All registrations close 30 NovemberRegistrations are now open for the 31st Conference of the Australasian Society for Classical Studies (ASCS), to be held at the University of Western Australia in Perth, Western Australia in February 2010. Registration for all participants, whether offering a paper or not, closes 30 November 2009. General informationThe conference will be officially opened at an evening reception on Tuesday, 2 February, and there will be three full days of conference papers (Wednesday 3 -- Friday 5 February). All sessions of papers will be held in the University Club of Western Australia, on the campus of the University of Western Australia. The registration fee for the conference includes conference materials, the cost of the reception, and tea-breaks for the three days of conference papers; this year, registration also covers the provision of lunches for the three days of conference proceedings. The general business of the conference concludes with an informal BBQ dinner in the gardens of Currie Hall (adjacent to the UWA campus) on the evening of Friday 5th February. Attendance at the dinner is optional, and a separate fee is charged for this event. ASCS is delighted to announce that the plenary speaker for ASCS 31 will be Professor Kurt Raaflaub, of Brown University. Registration requirementsThe conference is open only to financial members of ASCS; that is, those who have paid a membership subscription for 2009, which entitles them to attend the conference at the start of 2010. If you have not paid your 2009 subscription, you should do so before the end of this year to qualify to attend the conference. If you wish to attend the conference, but are not a member of ASCS, you are requested first to join the Society. Membership is open to all present and past members of university staffs who are or have been engaged in teaching or research in the languages, literature, history, thought and archaeology of the ancient world, and to other interested persons. Membership application forms may be accessed online. Existing members are encouraged to check that their subscription to ASCS is current for the year 2009 before registering for the conference. Registration forms for the conference, with full details of costs, can be downloaded in Word or PDF formats. PapersASCS conferences welcome contributions across a broad range of historical, literary, philological and archaeological matters from classical antiquity. Each speaker is allotted 30 minutes; to allow for discussion, presenters are requested to restrict their papers to a maximum of 20 minutes. Abstracts (of 100 words maximum) can be submitted on registration forms (see above) or else sent by email to the conference convenor, Dr Lara O'Sullivan. Please note that ASCS 31, with only three days devoted to conference papers, is somewhat shorter than the conferences of recent years. This reduction in duration will necessitate a reduction in the numbers of papers accepted for presentation. Prospective presenters are thus urged to register as soon as possible, to secure a place. All registrations must be paid for, and all abstracts of papers submitted, by 30 November 2009. The organiser regrets that she is unable to accept any registrations or offers of papers after that date. AccommodationThe conference organiser regrets that she is unable to arrange
accommodation for conference participants. There are, however, a
number of residential colleges adjacent to the campus of the
University of Western Australia; all are within easy walking
distance of the campus, and all offer a range of accommodation
styles, from student rooms (with shared bathroom facilities) to
motel-style rooms (with ensuites) and self-contained apartments.
Conference registrands are encouraged to investigate the colleges
listed below, and to contact the colleges directly for their
accommodation requirements. Those prefering to stay in a hotel may wish to consider Sullivans (a 3-star boutique hotel located approximately 5 minutes by bus from the UWA campus). The UWA campus is also easily accessed by public transport from the Perth central business district, where there a number of hotels available. Those whose budgets so permit may wish to consider the Duxton Hotel (5 star accommodation) Transport(Please note: the following prices are offered as an approximate guide only, and may be subject to change.) Perth airport has separate terminals - international (1) and Domestic (2 & 3) Approximate taxi fares
Domestic terminals:
A telephone number for taxis (Swan taxis) is 13 13 30. A shuttle-bus service operates from both terminals. For details, contact perthshuttle@bigpond.com.au. The domestic terminals are also serviced by public buses; a standard fare from the airport to Perth city or to the UWA campus is approximately $3.50. Information and timetables for the local bus service are available from Transperth. Student travel subsidiesAs in the past, ASCS has again set aside an amount of money to provide subsidies for postgraduate and other students at both Australian and New Zealand universities towards the cost of travel to attend ASCS 31 in Perth. Any subsidy provided is not intended to cover the total cost of travel but to assist with the cost; it is not intended to be used for the costs of registration or accommodation. There is a limited amount of funding available, and we wish to share it around; subsidies will be proportionally based on the relative distance that each applicant has to travel. Students are also encouraged to investigate whether funding for conference travel is available from their own department or university. Only current members of ASCS (the student subscription is AU$25.00/approx. NZ$30.00 p.a.) may apply for subsidies. Membership application forms may be accessed online. To apply for a subsidy, students should download a form in Word or PDF format and follow the instructions. Any queries should be addressed to the ASCS Postgraduate Representative, Tim Scott (timothy.scott@students.mq.edu.au). Applications are due by Friday 11 December 2009. QueriesAll questions concerning ASCS 31 should be directed to the conference convenor, Dr Lara O'Sullivan. The Discipline Group of Classics and Ancient History UWA looks forward to welcoming ASCS 31 to Perth, and wishes to acknowledge the generous contribution of the UWA Vice-Chancellor, Professor Alan Robson, in support of this event. |
